Open Studio for Middle Schoolers (Grades 5-10)
Mondays 6:30-8:30
$ 250.00  (including supplies)
(6 open slots)

This is a class for the creative middle schooler to experiment and focus on drawing or painting (water based) as an area of artistic expression.  Open to kids who love to draw and are familiar with basic shading and rendering techniques in drawing.  With those basic skills understood we will venture into working on independent projects but I will circulate throughout the studio and offer guidance, suggestions (when solicited) and help the independent artist work though some problem areas.  I will identify if the class has a common interest and give short demonstrations and instruction for 4 of the classes but this is really for the artist who loves to draw, wants a set time aside and create work in a fun and supportive atmosphere and have access to all the art supplies in the studio and work with the mentorship of a working artist.
(Open to 8 students-6 spots remain) ( Students who are familiar with basic shading and rendering techniques in drawing.)

Let's Meet Famous Artists IV (ages 6-12)
Wednesdays  3:30-5:00
$ 225.00 (including supplies)
There are many wonderful innovative artists to learn from. My goal is to not only introduce a few masters but also, some contemporary artists and those lesser known. Open to all levels,  in eight weeks we will examine the work of eight artists, learn a bit about their life story, discuss what might have inspired them to become an artist and then we will try our own hand at creating a new style of art. When your child is finished with this class they will have tried eight new ways to make art and have the knowledge and recognition skills to point at a painting and exclaim "Aha! that looks just like a painting by..... !" For our last class we will have our popular artist quiz where the kids will share off their new knowledge with you and who knows you might learn something along the way as well.

The Nature Art of Chiura Obata  (Ages 8-14)
Friday's 3:30-5:00
$ 225.00 (including supplies)
I taught this class a few sessions ago with great success.  The students loved learning about this artist.  Chiura Obata was a Japanese born artist who moved to San Francisco in 1902.  I will share with the children his life story which is captivating.  Obata was not only an artist but a naturalist who painted the beauty of Yosemite.  He also established the first Japanese American Baseball team, was a descendant of Samurai, friend of Ansel Adams and eventually became a professor at the University of Berkeley.  Sadly, in 1942 when Japanese Americans were forced into interrnment camps, Obata was forced to live in horrible conditions in the desert and surrender the way of life he had worked so hard to establish. But, rather than give up, he created an art school in the internnment camp and taught art to inspire others and give the HOPE.  We will explore Sumi painting, fish printing and other traditional Japanese art forms while honoring the work and life of Obata as well as the beauty and importance of Nature in art.
